I’m having a hard time coming up with recipes these days — and I know I sound like a broken record but… THE HEAT! I just can’t get over how hot it’s been in North Carolina in June! Our AC is going none-stop all day and most of the night so I really don’t feel like producing more heat by cooking or baking. Ugh.
But you know, if life gives you lemons, you make Cherry Mint Sangria (what?). So here it goes – this is my quick and easy version of the Spanish classic and it all came together on a hot and sweaty afternoon this week. It was almost five o’clock (s’when the fun starts) and I found myself with a bowl of cherries, a bunch of mint and a bottle of Kirschwasser in the kitchen and bam! It hit me. Cherry Mint Sangria!
Granted, I had to run out to get a bottle of rosé and crushed ice but even 106F on the heat index couldn’t stop me!! Oh, and it was SO worth it.
Sangria tends to be too sweet for my taste. Most likely because the majority of folks use Moscato and sugar on top of super sweet fruit. This is so not what I am into. I like my drinks like I like my men – uh, naturally sweet and strong? Fruity and tart? OK, maybe not exactly. While I work on analogies, you get started on a pitcher of Cherry Mint Sangria for you, your fam and all your neighbors (s’how you make friends).
If you do happen to like your drinks a bit sweeter, it’s an easy fix. You can add natural sweetener (such as maple syrup) or start with a sweeter wine. It’s a breeze.
What is Kirschwasser?
Kirschwasser is German for “cherry water” – a fruit brandy that is made from fermented cherries (used as a whole with stone). It isn’t sweet like cherry liqueurs which is why I like adding it to mixed drinks! Good Kirschwasser has a refined taste with subtle flavors of cherry and a slight bitter-almond taste that derives from the stones.
- 1 bottle/ 750ml rosé wine (preferably organic)
- 2 cups cherries, pitted and halved
- ½ cup tart cherry juice
- 10-15 mint leaves
- 2-3 tablespoon Kirschwasser
- Optional: Sweetener, to taste (e.g. maple syrup)
- Ice for serving
- Combine all ingredients in a large pitcher or bowl. Cover and refrigerate for at least 1-2 (or longer) and serve over ice. Enjoy!
