A recent study found that honey was more effective than over-the-counter cough medicines, including those containing dextromethorphan (or DM), at treating cough and easing sore throat. This sweet and delicious Honey & Licorice Tea will help you get rid of your cough – naturally!
Although it is very early in the season, I have already had my first minor cold. Not to point any fingers but my soldier came back from Europe with a mean cough and I suspect he was the culprit!
For days, we coughed and coughed… since I stubbornly refuse to take any medication (I have to be in very bad shape to resort to OTCs or prescription drugs), I made my favorite Onion & Honey Cough Syrup. It never fails!
For a change of pace, however, I like making this Licorice Tea with Honey. Just before I go to bed, I sit down with a cup of this home brewed, sweet and comforting goodness and read a few pages of my book before I go to sleep. It eases any soreness in my throat and helps sooth my angry cough!
Licorice, or as we call it in Germany “sweet wood”, contains a compound that is about 50 times sweeter than sugar! No worries, though, this tea is only mildly sweet and very drinkable, even for those of you who prefer tart flavors (try adding some lemon juice to it).
Licorice is a tried and true cough and sore throat remedy but has many other health benefits, too: Licorice can help with stomach ulcers, canker sores, indigestion and even weight loss.
The superstar of this concoction is without doubt honey, though. As mentioned above, honey has shown to be more effective at treating coughs and sore throats than over-the-counter meds which comes as no surprise to me – I have been studying the healing powers of honey for years but it always amazes me again to read about its strength!
