Before the winter finally bids us goodbye, I have to sneak in at least one more seasonal fruit! I haven’t created a single pomegranate recipe this year so it’s high time – don’t you think?
Frankly, though, the rose tea that goes into this smoothie has all my attention.
My mom used to make tea from rose petals from her garden and I remember thinking just how eccentric she was for doing that. When in reality, she knew what’s up!
I just recently started making tea from rose petals (single ingredient) and I’m ca-razy about it! Roses have the most beautiful fragrance – fresh or dried. The sweet aroma of freshly steeped roses instantly calms my nerves and helps me find my balance. It’s a dynamite mood lifter!
Did you know that roses have numerous medicinal benefits? Not just on your skin — yeah, all the rose scented body care products are lovely but roses are seriously undervalued.
Among other things, roses are mildly sedative, anti-inflammatory and antidepressant. Roses even lower cholesterol and some herbalists say rose tea soothes a sore throat (I will definitely give it a try next time I feel a cold coming on).
For the most part, though, I just truly enjoy the simple pleasure of drinking rose tea. No matter how crappy my day was, enjoying some quiet time with a cup of rose tea brings me back to center and allows me to gather perspective on my life. Most aromatic teas have that effect on me but rose tea is definitely in the top 3!
On days that I feel like switching it up a little, a rose flavored smoothie is my drink of choice. Even though this smoothie has just subtle notes of rose, it’s enough to give it an elegance that you rarely find in every-day, run-of-the-mill smoothies.
- 1 cup rose tea (see notes)
- 1 frozen banana, peeled
- ¾ cup raspberries, fresh or frozen
- ½ cup pomegranate seeds, fresh or frozen
- ½ cup (non-dairy) yogurt or kefir
- Optional: liquid sweetener, to taste
- Combine all ingredients in a food processor and blend until smooth. Taste for sweetness and adjust if necessary. Makes 2 cups of delicious smoothie!
