This is quite possibly the healthiest Valentine’s Day dessert you can make! These heart shaped citrus slices drizzled with Cinnamon Maple Syrup are a fresh and nutritious treat for your sweetheart – or yourself!
This year, I’ll be in Colorado Springs for Valentine’s Day, visiting my dear friend Leah. The boys are traveling so it’ll be just us girls! Remember my friend Leah? I visited her in California exactly one year ago – this is the two of us at the beach in Monterrey:
Since we (that is, my soldier an I) don’t really do Valentine’s Day, it’s not a big deal that we won’t spend it together. Leah and I will probably have a major cook off, drink lots of biodynamic wine, then either pass out on the couch in front of the fire place OR go on a night hike and climb a mountain or something. It’s not unprecedented. With this lass, adventure is guaranteed!
Since Leah is the fittest chick I know — she’s a Major in the US Army (yah!) — I will have to get my skates on (literally) and work on my running shape so we can explore some trails together and generally, just be out and about, run, hike and climb! I am massively excited about this trip – I hear Colorado is gorgeous!?
I am still craving citrus fruits and generally, fresh and healthy foods so I wanted to make a super healthy Valentine’s Day dessert! I honestly think it does not get healthier than this, unless you eat raw kale salad or something – and that would be a sorry excuse for a Valentine’s dessert!
I made a cinnamon infused maple syrup to drizzle over my citrus salad but found my fruit to be sweet enough, actually (except for the grapefruit eeeek) so I used it sparingly but it did add a nice touch of flavor to it. Also, you never know what degree of sweetness your citrus is going to be. I recently bought some oranges that were so sour, it made me cringe!
I used my standard heart shaped cookie cutters for this project. Mine have fairly sharp edges so it worked perfectly!
So this is what it looks like if you drizzle Cinnamon Maple Syrup over your hearts:
- 4-6 pieces of citrus fruit (e.g. Navel oranges, blood oranges, grapefruit, Cara Cara, Mandarines, Clementines etc.)
- ¼ cup maple syrup (or more)
- 1 stick cinnamon
- In a small sauce pan or canteen cup, heat maple syrup and cinnamon stick for about 15 minutes. To intensify cinnamon flavor, allow cinnamon stick to steep overnight, otherwise, strain out right away.
- Peel citrus fruit and cut into ½" slices. Lightly press heart shaped cookie cutter onto a slice of citrus fruit and start carving out a heart using a pairing knife. Repeat for all other slices, arrange on a plate and drizzle with cinnamon maple syrup right before serving. Enjoy!
